The Reluctant Stylista

I used to pride myself in standing by my high heels (pun intended) the entire day. I could work, walk, dance, and occasionally run in a pair of pumps that I’d wear just before going out of the house and I’d only take them off in the evening (the only exception is driving, and that’s more because I’ve been trained in old school safety in that you never drive in heels). These days, however, I’ve been slipping into flats more often. Maybe chalk it up to age, but I find that I have a lot more energy left when I’m in comfortable flats (because yes, it’s not always a given that they’re comfy) especially at work when I usually have to be on my feet all day.

Case in point: I was styling for an engagement session at a hangar in Pasay. I slipped into this little black dress (from Topshop) I normally go for when I don’t want to think about what to wear, and then paired it with classic leather slip-ons from Menina Step. Of course, I forgot I was going to be at a hangar where it would obviously be windy–so I had to get a men’s blazer from my own trunk to keep myself from giving everyone a free show. Still, it does look like a pretty cool get-up all in all. Especially with the mirrored sunnies (got them from FLY shades).

Oh and yeah–I chopped off about eight inches (more or less) of my hair! It’s taking me a while to get used to it, but I do like how much lighter it feels.

CBTL Event - Alex Lapa

Dress: Zalora / Shoes: Le Bunny Bleu

My first instinct was to wear this tropical print dress with chunky white heels or a pair of sneakers, to keep it a bit more sports luxe. But I liked it even better when I wore it with this pair of uber lightweight white Oxfords from Le Bunny Bleu. And by the way, how cool is it to live in a country where you can get away with tropical prints at any given time?

A shoefie with Krissyfied. Aww, look how white my new Oxfords were! They’re not like that anymore, obvs. Though I still did get compliments about it a few days ago, for its worn-out look.

If I haven’t mentioned it before, I’ll say it now: sports luxe is my favorite ongoing trend (since 2014). Sneakers are getting so much love from designers nowadays and I find myself wearing them often. Granted, I go for my usual subtle gold wedge sneaks or my neon pink adidas. But every now and then I pick up my Native Shoes Moc pair in blue because they’re ultra lightweight and perfect for the outdoors. And okay, because they matched my super cool blue mirrored aviators.

Neoprene pullover: Avel Bacudio / trumpet skirt: H&M / shoes: Native Shoes

This limited edition ‘A’ neoprene pullover was designed by Avel Bacudio to support a cause that is close to his heart–helping visually-impaired Filipino children. They are available in round neck and V-neck and also in children’s sizes. I really like how minimalist it looks! Perfect for that pop of blue.

Imono jewelry and - Alex Lapa

Sunnies: Fly Shades / Titanium ring: / Charm bracelet: Imono / Watch: Zalora

I usually favor gold jewelry (or gold-colored accessories) over silver ones, but these days I’m discovering the joys of some silver-hued metals. For one thing, materials like stainless steel, titanium and tungsten don’t need as much maintenance compared to typical metals used for jewelry. And I don’t even have to take them off when I wash my hands or go for a swim (yes I’m a lazy ass). So even though normally I’d just be with multiple rings and an ear cuff, now I find myself mixing it up with a men’s watch and this stainless steel charm bracelet.

Well, that’s pretty much how I style my outfits wearing flats, these days! I don’t think I’m doing a shabby job of it, though I must admit I still prefer the look of heels most of the time. Also, because I hate being as short as I am. I’m still loving the sports luxe trend so I’ll continue to wear flats more often.
