The Reluctant Stylista

One of the reasons why I was hesitant to dive into the business of engagement styling was because I felt like I was going to be out of my element.  Sure, I give fashion advice to friends who want to look better with the right clothes and the right fit.  I’ve also been blessed with plenty of opportunities to dress models and some TV personalities.  Then again, that’s their job–to play a role, be dressed up.  The clothes don’t necessarily have to be them.  But how do you dress up non-industry people to look perfect in a once-in-a-lifetime photoshoot?  I would always worry that the couple may have liked the idea of this whole “production” but when it comes to the real day, they’d be overwhelmed with the fantastic makeup and larger-than-life clothes.  I mean, I don’t want them to look at their pre-nup photos afterwards and think, “What was I thinking? This isn’t me.”

(Though to be quite honest, sometimes, transforming into something else just for a day is a good thing. But that’s just me. And Lady Gaga.)

But, the time came when I was approached by a couple, Rod and Decilyn, who wanted to look straight out of a lifestyle magazine.  A classic-styled shoot, if you will.  I worked on this with my talented cousin Rae again, and as you can imagine, we were excited at the opportunity to do some heavier, sexy makeup (her) and finally get to use some designer dresses (me).  I also enjoyed scouring pegs for the concept, even down to the poses and setting.  I suggested something like the look and feel of some choice photos I found from Vogue Korea (upon this discovery, I find that I am now a fan of the magazine) and discussed it with Noel (the photographer).  One of the best things of working with this team is that I’m already very comfortable with them and I can easily share ideas about everything regarding the whole look, not just the clothes (which is obviously my jurisdiction).

Noel suggested using a hotel for the location, which was just perfect for that classy couple look.  We got Marriott Hotel at Resorts World, which had a lot of photo-worthy areas.

Now on to Decilyn and Rod’s photos:

This had a really hilarious outtake (my fault) that had us gasping for breath.

The accessories are familiar, I know. But this shoot was way back last year and I only got to wear them for my own recently. ^^;

Now here comes my favorite set (because of the clothes and lighting). Noel shot some of these from inside the bathroom.
